Tecnicos: literally, technicians, the term tecnicos refers to the good guys in a lucha libre match. The term is also comparable to a face in North American wrestling. In lucha libre matches, tecnicos will go out of their way to do what is right. Ideally, they should turn down the opportunity to cheat during a match and should behave cordially towards the crowds. Their role as good guys will often extend outside the context of matches-- (although not always) tecnicos are know to be better responding of fans when approached before or after matches.

Most often a luchador's name will provide a hint as to whether he is a tecnico or a rudo (a tecnico's opposite), this however is not always the case. Famously, El Santo (the Saint), one of Mexico's greatest legends and heroes, began his career as a brutal rudo while his greatest rival (and sometimes ally) Blue Demon was a tecnico for a large portion of his career.

A luchador's stature and physique may also indicate if he or she is a tecnico. Traditionally tecnicos are underdogs, making up for their lack of height and muscle with their improved wrestling techniques (hence the name). Additionally, a luchador's nationality will also determine if he or she is a tecnico. Luchadores with regional names (implying national identiy) like El Rayo de Jalisco will often be tecnicos.

Normally, porras respond better to tecnicos than they do to rudos, greeting the former with cheers and the latter with insults. Some luchadores will switch sides from rudos to tecnicos to increase their popularity or to promote a story line. Among luchadores, it is said that it is harder to be a tecnico than a rudo because of a tecnico's increased level of lucha libre skills. Some say that the mark of a true luchador is to be able to fight as both a tecnico or a rudo.
