If you are true fan of lucha libre, there is one name you MUST be familiar with- El Santo. To not know who El Santo is, is to not know lucha libre at all. El Santo was more than a luchador, he was a movie star, a folk hero, an icon. Sadly, even those who claim to know who El Santo is may only know him through his son, El Hijo del Santo (a legend himself).
I wish I could say something about El Santo that hasn't already been said, but there are plenty of websites out there that have already done a great job. The purpose of these posts wasn't to do that anyways. When I started this series I wanted to do so to talk about luchadores that have influenced me and my life.
Growing up in Mexico, El Santo was my Batman, my Superman, my James Bond. He was everything I wanted to be when I grew up- and more. He was an average man, never claimed to be anything but. He didn't have any real superpowers, but he didn't need them. He was great because he did the right thing.
To this day when I am faced with a difficult moral decision in my life I ask myself, "what would El Santo do?" The answer most times being, "kick-ass." Because that's what he was good at. He kicked ass and maintained his dignity and he always got the chick. What better role model does one need?
